S4

Welcome S4s!

Currently, you are working on a project for your Added Value unit and a discursive essay for your folio.

Added Value Unit

http://mimiandeunice.com/

Each of you has been asked to choose two books to do your project on. The books should either be: a) linked by a similar theme/genre b) by the same author.

As you read, you should make notes about the main events, characters and themes in the book. Your project is to write an essay comparing some aspect of the books you have chosen. You will be given more guidance on this as you progress. For now, focus on reading your chosen books.

Discursive Essay

You have been given a lot of time in class to research ideas for a topic. Your topic should be something that interests you and that you will be able to find enough information about to write an essay of at least 500 words in length. The basic structure of an argumentative essay is as follows:

Structure of an Argumentative essay

Introduction - a simple introduction to the topic and the issues.

Summary of opposition's view

Your argument (1)

Your argument (2)

Your argument (3) Build up from weakest to strongest

Conclusion - sum up your view and leave the reader with something to think about.

Bear the following points in mind:

1) Formal language (i.e. no slang, no colloquialisms, no contractions.)

2) Back up your points with facts/evidence.

3) Keep a note of your sources of information for your bibliography.

4) Use footnotes to cite your sources.

5) Be wary of plagiarism. Always use your own words, or put quotes in quote marks if you are using someone else's. Always say where you got your information from.

Current Homework!

Due Friday 14/6/13

Extended to 17/6/13

Complete a plan and first draft of your discursive essay. Both of these should be handed in together. It would be to your advantage if the essay was typed. You can either hand it in to me in person or email it to missfyvie@live.co.uk

All That Glisters - This essay should also be completed and handed in by 17/6/13.
